Welsh County "hammers" second home owners to help just 15 first-time buyers

A council has "pointlessly hammered" second home owners with high taxes, after admitting the funds raised from the premium charge were failing to help locals get on the housing ladder. Ceredigion's county council's scheme to help first-time buyers buy homes has fallen flat, with only a handful of people applying in two years.

Carol Peett, of buying agent West Wales Property Finders, said "It's great in theory and everyone thinks helping first-time buyers is a lovely idea but we all knew it wouldn't work. It's not a surprise. The second homes premium has been a complete disaster, people are being pointlessly hammered by it. It's less about helping first-tme buyers and more about jealousy".
